Part Seven of Nine: Monotheism
Many of you might ask, “What is monotheism?” Simply put, monotheism is the belief in one God. The etymology is Greek and splits thusly: Mono is the transliteration of the Greek word “monos,” meaning alone (or one). The plural syllable word “Theism” is the transliteration of the Greek word “Theos” meaning God, and the English suffix “ism.” Put the three together and you have the belief in one God, or monotheism.
To be in the pale of Christian orthodoxy, we must believe in one God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob. . .the God of the Bible. Again, the five essential doctrines of the Christian faith are 1) The deity of Christ , 2) Salvation by grace, 3) the resurrection of Christ, 4) The Gospel, and 5) Monotheism, or the believe in one God alone. The Bible is very clear on all of these and monotheism is no exception.
v3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. [Exodus 20:3 KJV]
v10 Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.
v11 I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour. [Isaiah 43:10-11 KJV]v6 Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.
v8 Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any. [Isaiah 44:6, 8 KJV]
There is but one God, and that is the Creator of the universe and His name is the “I AM.” God has many names scattered throughout the Bible, which there are too many to list. There are a few secondary essentials of the Christian faith, and we can tie them to the first five essentials. However, that doesn’t mean that they are any less in power, significance, or importance.
Again, in the essentials, there must be unity. However, unity without the truth is hazardous, meaning, the truth as contained between the pages of God’s Word. . .the Bible. Be NOT united with false teaching, which lies outside the pages of this Book.
Tomorrow we will briefly look at some secondary essentials.
