The Life of the Flesh

My eyes have been getting worse with each passing year. My last visit to the optometrist was about two years ago, at which time I received some disheartening news. I had a small tear in my right retina. My pressure was up to 28, which meant that I had glaucoma, as 21 was the break off point. Moreover, there was no cure. Glasses worked for a while but I still couldn’t see that well, what with eye strain, double-vision, and out of focus reading. I am an author and I rely heavily on my eyes tremendously to write.

Most people thought that I might have cataracts, so when I got home from my travels to Texas, I visited a local optometrist here in Port Angeles, Washington. Shock! Upon examination, tests, and imagery, the doctor’s findings were completely different and that I do not have glaucoma. My pressures were down to 25. He explained to me that I could have pressures as high as 30 and not have glaucoma, but on the other hand, I could have pressures of 14 and have glaucoma. He said that when there’s damage to the eyes, then you have glaucoma.

The doctor said, what I did have was ocular hypertension. He said that I did have a scar on the inside of my eye but it was healed and nothing to worry about. He showed me a 3D image of the area and below the surface and was probably due to a childhood disease like chicken-pox or measles. I had had both.

The doctor was very informative and I learned allot. Probably the best eye exam ever. I was impressed with all the images of my eye and 3D pictures of same. I was amazed at the amount of blood vessels that circulated throughout my eyes. They were like little red road maps that service’s my vision. When I saw all the blood vessels in my eyes, I don’t know why but my first thought was, “The life is in the blood.” Blood courses through every inch of our body and is the pulse of life. It is the reason that we are all alive. Without our blood, we would die.

William Harvey in 1616 discovered that blood circulation was the key element in physical life, corroborating what the Bible revealed thousands of years prior. Go figure, the Bible is right again.

v11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. [Leviticus 17:11 KJV]

This Scripture told of animal sacrifices and the atonement for men’s souls through the blood of the animal. In fact, without the shedding of blood there can be no remission of sin [1]. Moses officiated at the first covenant [2] through the sacrifice of animal blood, but the blood of beasts could not take away man’s sin, so there had to be a continuing sacrificial ceremony with more animal blood.

God has always required blood to atone for man’s sin [3]. However, the blood of animals set the stage for the second covenant [4] made by Christ when He shed His Blood seven times [5] for the forgiveness of man’s sin, on the way to the Cross, once for all [6].

The life is in the Blood. Christ’s Blood is our life and forgiveness of sin. It is how we overcome by pleading His Blood and with the words of our testimony [7]. Christ died for me through His atoning sacrifice and the shedding of His precious Blood for me. However, guess what folks? I am not unique, for He also died and shed His Blood for you! Christ is no respecter of person [8] and He is not willing that one should perish [9]. The Lord also said,

v19. . .I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live. [Deuteronomy 30:19 KJV]
