STEPPING OUT OF DARKNESS

The Juan De Fuca Strait flows between Canada and Washington State. It separates the two countries and is the head water that leads to many tributaries on both sides that reach inland for many a mile. I live in a little cabin remotely located about 96 miles southeast of Port Angeles in the middle of the forest overlooking one of those tributaries. It is beautiful.

However, early one morning a couple of days ago, I couldn’t sleep, so I crawled out of bed at 3:30 AM. I thought that if I could get some fresh air, it might have a soothing effect on me and allow me finally to get some sleep. I walked very slowly toward the front door because the only light in the room was from the large numerals on my electric clock that affirmed the 3:30 AM hour.

I made it to the door, twisted the knob, and pulled on the door. As God as my witness, I had just opened the door into nothingness. It’s like someone had hung a black curtain where a screen door might be located. I’d never opened a door into nothingness before. I didn’t know what to expect. Was this a dream and I was headed into a fairytale or what? Quite honestly, the blackness was a little frightening and I DO NOT scare that easy. I swear to you that I could not see anything, zero, zilch, nothing, nada, zip.

The world outside my door didn’t exist. It was completely devoid of any light. . .whatsoever. Even the trees hid the light of the stars from shining on the path that led from the cabin to the house that I knew was there not more than 20-25 feet away. I could not see the structure. . .at all, or anything in between!

I thought to myself, if I stepped outside, how far would I fall before I hit bottom? The darkness felt totally evil and void of any life. I quickly reached for the light switch and flipped it on but immediately squinted because the light had glared into and irritated my eyes. My eyes had become accustomed to the darkness.

At one time or the other, we all get spiritually accustomed to the darkness because Jesus said that we are in the world but not of the world [1]. However, He also said that He is the light of the world.

v12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life [John 8:12 KJV].

The quickest and only way out of darkness is to get into the light. Knowing God’s Word is paramount to coming out of darkness [2], for Christ is the Word [3].

As I stood there in the cabin at the front door, I felt like a prisoner of darkness. Then I turned on the light and became a bondservant [4] to Christ [5].

When we are in the darkness, immediately reach for God’s Word, and let the light dispel the darkness, for everything in the darkness is death and everything in the light is life, so follow Christ and receive the light of life brothers and sisters. Christ is not only the light of the world and the Word, but He is also the Way, the Truth, and the Life [6].

God’s Word – Read it, learn it, use it, live it.

[4] Slave. We voluntarily give up our rights and let Christ rule in our lives. Being a bondservant is not drudgery. Our reward is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord and soon coming husband.
